Irene was built in 1974 as a 21-story high-rise condominium building with 146 units in North Ocean City. The building’s floor plan mix is centered on two-bedroom and three-bedroom condos, which gives it a more limited unit range than buildings that include efficiencies or one-bedroom layouts. Elevator access is available, and the property is professionally managed on-site, which adds a more structured day-to-day operating setup for owners and guests.
The building is located at 11100 Coastal Highway in a direct oceanfront position, less than a half mile from Gold Coast Mall and Gold Coast Theaters. Amenities are moderate in scope and include a fitness center, game room, and an oceanfront outdoor pool. Irene is commonly considered by second-home buyers, vacation-rental investors, and buyers focused on oceanfront views, and it also allows short-term rentals.

Irene offers a balanced mix of floor plans suited to a range of buyer preferences.

Interior layouts, square footage, and finishes vary by unit, floor level, and ownership.
Irene has long been known for its place on what locals call ‘High-Rise Row,’ and for decades it had one of the most recognizable features in Ocean City: the elevated glass-dome indoor pool facing Coastal Highway.
Here’s the thing, though: that dome is going away. After years of use, it’s simply become too expensive to repair, and the association made the decision to remove it. In its place, a brand-new outdoor pool is being built on the oceanfront sun deck, which is a very smart evolution. It shifts the focus back to what people actually want to experience when they’re here: The Ocean. I love their -02, -04 & -06 stack units, which feature one of the largest oceanfront balconies of any high rise.
Another feature I love about Irene, and one that often gets overlooked, is that every condo has private bayside balconies, in addition to their oversized oceanfront balconies. Much like Fountainhead Towers or Century I, that dual-balcony setup gives owners two very different experiences from the same unit. Oceanfront when you want the sound and energy, bayside when you want sunsets and a quieter moment.
Irene isn’t a flashy building, but it’s well managed and has always been a functional, livable oceanfront option. Understanding where it’s been, and where it’s going next, is important here. With the pool transition and the balcony setup, this is a building that continues to adapt while staying true to what’s always made it appealing.
Irene is typically best suited for:
Some of the most common mistakes buyers make when evaluating Irene include:
Irene allows short-term rentals and has strong rental potential, making rental use a common consideration for buyers evaluating the building. Its direct oceanfront setting in North Ocean City supports consistent interest from owners who plan to use their property personally and also make it available for shorter stays, although rental results can vary based on unit condition, management, seasonality, and ownership approach.
The building’s rental use is supported by its oceanfront location, moderate on-site amenities, and high name recognition. Buyers considering Irene with rental use in mind should still review the building’s current rules, operating costs, management structure, and any property-specific factors that may affect how a unit functions as a short-term rental.
Homeowner association fees at Irene vary based on unit size and location. HOA fees generally contribute to building maintenance, amenity upkeep, insurance, management, and common area utilities.
Parking policies, pet rules, and rental guidelines should be reviewed during the contract process, as association policies may evolve over time.
Irene tends to see moderate market activity, with demand shaped largely by its direct oceanfront location in North Ocean City, its high-rise structure, and its high level of name recognition. Buyer interest generally comes from second-home buyers, rental-focused owners, and purchasers looking specifically for oceanfront positioning with a more established building profile.
Within the building, pricing differences are often influenced by factors such as unit type, view orientation, floor level, and overall condition, even within a relatively moderate floor plan mix. Buyers evaluating Irene typically look at how a specific unit compares in layout, updates, and position within the building, while also weighing the effect of the building’s moderate amenity package and overall scale on ownership and resale appeal.
Irene is conveniently located near many popular North Ocean City destinations, including:
Irene typically gets compared to Fountainhead Towers and Century I first because of the dual-balcony lifestyle. Both give you oceanfront and bayside exposure. They’re both high-rise buildings with similar floorplan offerings, are similar in age, and usually in similar price points. And Century I also features a parking lot indoor pool. English Towers meets those same criteria while being slightly newer, with extremely strong building management. Rainbow, like English Towers, is slightly newer and offers larger floorplans. Flying Cloud is more minimal and no-frills while still being comparable in price point. Irene usually lands with buyers who like space, strong balconies, and a building that has adapted over time without being as rental ‘frenzied’ as buildings like Sea Watch and Golden Sands.
Does Irene have a pool?
The Irene's indoor pool has been torn down and an outdoor pool is currently under construction to be completed by summer 2026.
Is Irene pet-friendly?
Owners are permitted to have pets. Renters & guests of owners are not permitted to bring pets due to insurance liability reasons.
How far is Irene from the Boardwalk?
Irene is about 7 miles from the Boardwalk Inlet parking lot.
Is Irene oceanfront?

Does Irene have an on-site management office?
